Why This Project Matters

The UN Reproductive Health Agency estimates that 55,000 pregnant women are trapped in Gaza, dealing with displacement, starvation, bombardment and severe malnutrition.

Almost 130 babies are born daily, often outside a healthcare facility and with no healthcare support. This has a devastating domino effect on newborns, including premature &low birth babies. Doctors are reporting many babies born under 1kg, already fighting for their lives from preventable complications. Babies born with a low birthweight are twenty times more likely to die than one of a healthy weight. This is down to increased maternal stress, the toxins from bombs, malnutrition and limited antenatal care. This impact is generational and completely preventable.

• Establish a fully equipped NICU at Al-Khair Hospital to deliver specialized, life-saving care for newborns and premature infants.

• Enhance Al-Khair Hospital’s capacity—and the wider health system’s ability—to manage neonatal emergencies during crisis conditions.

• Improve access to high-quality neonatal services for premature and critically ill newborns affected by displacement and disrupted healthcare.

• Help reduce neonatal mortality and improve overall health outcomes for newborns in Gaza.
