Can Zakat pay for medical treatment?

Helping a patient and fulfilling Zakat are connected by an important question: does the recipient and the way the gift is used meet the requirements for Zakat? Medical need alone does not settle that question.

Before giving Zakat, ask PIMA which current fund and payment route match your intention. Do not submit a gift as General Charity or Sadaqah if you intend it to be Zakat.

Medical need is not a ninth category. The patient must qualify through one of the eight categories Allah has named, most often the poor or the needy.
The short answer
Eligibility comes before the medical appeal
Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 identifies the categories of people who may receive Zakat, including the poor and needy. Being unwell is not itself an additional category.
When considering Zakat for medical help, check both the intended recipient and how the donation will reach them. Do not assume that a hospital, equipment or emergency appeal is automatically suitable for Zakat.

Care for people who need it
These are examples of medical support, not a list of verified Zakat offerings. Whether Zakat can be used depends on the recipient and the giving arrangement.
Essential treatment
Necessary medicines and hospital treatment for a qualifying patient who cannot afford them.
Chronic care
Dialysis and continuing treatment where missing care would put a qualifying patient at greater risk.
Emergency intervention
Urgent surgery or trauma care when the patient qualifies and the route has been approved.
Maternal and newborn care
Necessary treatment for a qualifying mother or baby when the family cannot meet the cost.

Make sure the route matches your intention
If you intend to give Zakat, ask PIMA for the current eligible fund, how the gift will be used and how to identify it correctly when paying. A General Charity or Sadaqah selection is not a substitute for an identified Zakat route.
